Maldives National Association of Construction Industry MNACI

MNACI is a vital hub for stakeholders in the Maldives Construction Industry. Our membership includes Large, Medium, and Small Contractors, Construction Companies, Real Estate Developers, Suppliers, Logistics Providers, Clearance Agents, and more, all contributing to the industry's strength. By fostering collaboration and communication, MNACI enhances standards and promotes sustainable development, enabling members to succeed in a competitive landscape.

The Maldives National Association of Construction Industry serves as the principal organization representing the nation's second-largest industry, which plays a vital role in the economic development and infrastructural advancement of the Maldives.

MNACI History

Formed on the 30th of October 2001, the seven founding members -Mr. Mohamed Abdul Azeez, Mr. Jaufar Easa Adam, Mr. Hassan Waheed, Mr. Ibrahim Waheed, Mr. Abdulla Mohamed, Mr. Ibrahim Rasheed and Mr. Alau Ali – came together to establish MNACI to represent, secure and sustain the interests of all the stakeholders of the Maldivian construction industry. By organising as a national association we have created a platform for securing the wellbeing of this vital industry.

MNACI is entrusted with the responsibilities of not only ensuring that the industrial, contractual and technical needs of the members are promoted but also with the equally vital task of promoting the development of the industry and enhance the rank and reputation of the members of the Maldivian construction industry to internationally acceptable standards. One of the primary roles of MNACI is to look after the interests of the contractors, labourers, employers, employees, the all technical and support staff plus the collaborating commercial and market interests of the construction industry and to generate public awareness for these interests both within the government and among the general public.

MNACI (Maldives National Association of Construction Industry) is led by a President, supported by an Executive Board, which works closely with industry stakeholders to achieve the organization's goals. The President's term is one year, with the possibility of serving two consecutive terms. After a two-term presidency, a one-year gap is required before re-election. The President, along with two Vice Presidents, a Treasurer, and seven Executive Board members, oversees the organization. Founder members can observe but do not vote in Board decisions. The Executive Board meets weekly, and an annual General Meeting is held for all members.

MNACI has worked to secure representation in key policy-making bodies, including the government’s Construction Industry Development Board, and became a member of the International Federation of Asian and Western Pacific Contractors' Associations (IFAWPCA) in 2008. MNACI's Past President, Mohamed Ali Janah, has been part of IFAWPCA's Executive Board for six years, and chairs its Human Resources and Education Committee.

Over the past 12 years, MNACI has successfully advocated for the interests of the Maldivian construction industry, becoming the primary representative of construction-related concerns in the country. Through lobbying efforts, MNACI has influenced government policies, including proposals for addressing price fluctuations in the industry. These include introducing a price fluctuation clause in government contracts, creating a Construction Price Index, and establishing measures to compensate companies for genuine losses on government projects. MNACI believes these initiatives should extend beyond public sector contracts to also cover private sector projects.

MNACI is committed to improving the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) standards of the Maldivian construction industry, aiming to align them with international norms. The organization also focuses on ensuring that the Maldivian construction industry remains dominated by local contractors, advocating for education, financing, and resources to help them compete with foreign contractors. MNACI is collaborating with commercial banks and the Maldives Monetary Authority to provide more affordable financing for local contractors.

As the second-largest industry in the country, construction is a major employer of both expatriate and Maldivian workers, and any issues affecting the industry have wide economic implications. MNACI is working to ensure that the government continues to support the industry through investments in both public and private sector projects, emphasizing the need for sustained investment to foster growth.
